Creating the Best Class Schedule Ever!

BYU course registration is right around the corner and with it comes the stress of getting your class schedule organized! You don't have to wait up until midnight to get into your favorite courses though, and with some preparation, you can get the class schedule you've been dreaming of!

First, you need to pick out your classes

I suggest that if this is your first semester of college, or your first semester back after a break, you take under 14 credits. More than that is going to be difficult to keep up with and increase your stress level. If you have to take more than 14 credits, you can read about ways to manage your stress here.

Those 14 credits shouldn't all be intense coursework either, mix in a fun course as well as a course that helps you stay active! Some fun courses to take at BYU are as follows:

  • EXSC 410 - Stress Management
  • MUSIC 113 & 114R - Beginning Piano Techniques for non-Music Majors 1 & 2
  • MUSIC 117 & 118R - Basic Guitar for non-Music Majors 1 & 2
  • MUSIC 111R - Vocal Lessons for non-Music Majors
  • SWELL 175 - Scuba Diving
  • SWELL 150 - Ice Skating
  • DANCE 181 - Country Swing Dancing (make sure you sign up for the right gender specific section)
  • ART 105 - Ceramics for non-Art Majors
  • ART 120 - Watercolor for non-Art Majors
  • ENGL 490R - Creative Writing with Brandon Sanderson (Winter only)
  • ENT 101 - Intro to Entrepreneurship
Some active classes:
  • SWELL 191 - Weight Lifting
  • SWELL 107 - Pilates
  • SWELL 109 - Yoga
  • SWELL 181 & 182 - Tennis (beginning and intermediate)
  • SWELL 156 & 157 - Soccer (beginning and intermediate)
  • SWELL 139 - Running
You will also have GE classes as well as required courses for your major. These are important to track and most of the time you can find a MAP of what courses are suggested to take when. Pay special attention to courses that are only offered during specific semesters and if any courses have prerequisites.

Classes I think every student should take

These classes were super beneficial and I feel like everyone should take, regardless of how college ready you may feel.
  • NDFS 100 - Nutrition
  • EXSC 387 - Lifestyle and Chronic Disease Prevention
  • EXSC 221 - Science of Wellness
  • SFL 260 - Family Finance
  • SFL 224 - Marriage Enhancement
  • STDEV 109 - Effective Study & Learning

Now the big question, how do I register?

You can create a shopping cart for your classes by going to mymap.byu.edu > Register > Cart. This allows you to look through courses and add them to your cart before your registration date. Then you can submit your cart and on your registration date, the system will register for the courses you added to your cart, in order from top to bottom. If the class is full, you can be added to the waitlist by checking that option before/after submitting your cart. If you are added to a waitlist and enroll in a different section, the course you enrolled in will be dropped if the class you waitlisted for becomes available.

A special note for returned missionaries

If you are returning from a foreign speaking mission, you will want to ensure you are signing up for the right language class when you get back. For most Spanish-speaking missionaries, this is SPAN 321. By taking the class, you can take a test at the end that will give you 16 credits of Spanish classes right away. This helps you get a language certificate from BYU, as well as helps you fulfill the Spanish minor, major, or secondary major requirements.

What are your favorite classes at BYU?
